Traveler Discovers Discrepancy in Bag Weight at Chandigarh Airport: 14.5 kg vs 12.2 kg, Airline Responds
A passenger traveling with IndiGo from Chandigarh to Delhi recently recounted an unusual experience while checking in his luggage at Chandigarh Airport. He discovered that the weighing scales at two different counters provided conflicting readings for the same bag, raising concerns about their reliability. The passenger noted that his bag felt lighter than the weight indicated by the scale, prompting him to suspect a possible malfunction. When he voiced his concerns to an IndiGo staff member, she advised him to try weighing his bag on another scale. However, to his dismay, the second scale also displayed a different weight, intensifying his doubts about the accuracy of the equipment.
The passenger decided to document the incident and shared it on social media, where the video quickly gained traction. “Chandigarh Airport. 30th Jan, ’25. Around 16:00 hrs @indigo.6e Counter. Same Bag. Two counters. Two different weights. 2.3 kg difference,” Daksh Sethi captioned the video on Instagram.
He further expressed his concerns, saying, “Can these machines be easily manipulated? I hope this is a rare case and just a technical glitch. I generally felt that my bag wasn’t as heavy as it showed, so the lady at the counter asked me to check it on the other belt. And to my surprise, it showed a different number! These little things break our trust in the system. I hope this is taken up very seriously.”
The incident has sparked widespread concern among travelers, who are now questioning the reliability of airport equipment and the potential consequences for baggage handling and fees. One user commented, “This has happened to me and my husband almost three times in the last five years.”
Another said, “Airports are definitely scamming us!”
A third shared, “I’ve experienced this myself. I traveled through four airports on the same trip with the same luggage, and on my way back, my total luggage weight increased by 12 kg. I only had three items. It was just impossible. I didn’t shop or add anything; my bags should have weighed less since I got rid of some things during the trip. I was traveling alone with a child to another state, and it felt like harassment.”

IndiGo responded to the video, stating, “Hi, we appreciate you bringing this to our attention. We’d like to inform you that the weighing machines are calibrated and certified by the airport operator at regular intervals. Be assured, we have shared your feedback with the relevant team. Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to welcoming you onboard again soon.”
