New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to Google following a plea by Aaradhya Bachchan, daughter of actors Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, seeking the removal of false information about her health from multiple websites. She filed the fresh petition in a follow-up to a previous Delhi High Court order which had directed search engine giant Google, entertainment social media account Bollywood Times, and other websites to remove content that Aaradhya Bachchan identified in her previous petition.

The 13-year-old has requested a summary judgment to prevent the spread of misleading content. A summary judgment allows courts to resolve civil disputes without requiring oral evidence.

During the hearing, it was argued that the YouTube uploaders failed to appear in court, thereby forfeiting their right to defend themselves.

Background of the Case

On April 19, 2023, Aaradhya Bachchan approached the Delhi High Court against a YouTube tabloid for publishing false reports about her health. In her plea, she highlighted that despite being a healthy school-going child, certain individuals have been posting misleading videos on YouTube, falsely claiming that she is gravely ill. One video even falsely reported her death.

The plea further stated that manipulated images were being used in these videos to support the fabricated claims. Additionally, the content creators encouraged viewers to subscribe to their channels, amplifying the spread of misinformation.

Aaradhya’s petition contends that these actions violate her right to privacy, breach Information Technology laws, and infringe upon the Intellectual Property Rights held by the Bachchan family, including copyright over her images.

The High Court, while addressing the matter, condemned the dissemination of false information about a minor, stating that such actions reflect a concerning moral decline among content creators. The court also emphasized the need for sensitivity and compassion when dealing with children in the public eye.
