In a significant move to combat drought and enhance water conservation, the Maharashtra government has signed three crucial Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) under its Soil and Water Conservation Department. These agreements, aimed at strengthening the Jalyukt Shivar Scheme and promoting a statewide water conservation movement, mark a transformative step toward ensuring long-term water sustainability.

New Policy for Water Conservation Maintenance

Recognizing the need for sustainable upkeep of existing water conservation structures, the state government plans to introduce a new policy focused on their repair and long-term efficiency.

Key Agreements Signed:

  1. Tata Motors, NAAM Foundation & Government of Maharashtra (GoM)
    • Expansion of the Silt-Free Dams, Silt-Laden Shivar Yojana to enhance water storage across 23 districts by removing sediment from reservoirs.
    • Revival of at least 1,000 water bodies, including check dams, lakes, and rivers.
    • Tata Motors will oversee execution, deploying Water Fellows in each district for effective implementation.
  2. Bharatiya Jain Sanghatna & GoM
    • Strengthening public participation by gathering demand from villages and raising awareness about water conservation.
    • Appointing coordinators at state and district levels to ensure widespread engagement.
  3. Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC) & GoM
    • Satellite-based mapping and verification of water conservation structures built over the last 25 years.
    • Development of a web portal and mobile app for real-time monitoring, maintenance, and repairs under Jalyukt 3.0.
    • Establishing a five-year plan for tracking and maintaining all conservation efforts.

These strategic partnerships mark a major step toward a drought-free Maharashtra, promising better irrigation, improved groundwater recharge, and increased income for farmers.
