Latur, June 13, 2026: In a significant ruling protecting the rights of senior citizens, an 89-year-old woman from Maharashtra’s Latur district has successfully regained ownership of her 7.5-acre agricultural land after authorities found that her family failed to care for her as promised.

Housabai Lahade, a resident of Karsa village in Latur, had transferred her farmland to her grandson and great-grandson through a registered gift deed. The property was gifted on the condition that the two would provide her with proper care, support and maintenance during her old age.

However, Lahade later alleged that the family members neglected her after obtaining ownership of the land. Seeking justice, she approached the Senior Citizens Tribunal under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.

After examining the case and hearing both sides, the tribunal concluded that the beneficiaries had failed to fulfill the conditions attached to the property transfer. The tribunal observed that when property is transferred in exchange for care and support, such commitments are legally enforceable.

The tribunal subsequently cancelled the gift deed and ordered that ownership of the land be restored to Lahade. It also directed revenue authorities to correct the land records and ensure that no future disputes arise regarding the property.

The ruling is being viewed as an important reminder that senior citizens have legal protection against neglect and exploitation. Legal experts say the decision reinforces the principle that family members who receive property in return for caring for elderly relatives must honour their obligations or risk losing their rights to the transferred assets.

The case has drawn attention across Maharashtra as a strong example of the legal safeguards available to protect the dignity, welfare and rights of senior citizens.
