A hunting expedition in Maharashtra’s Palghar district turned fatal when a villager was mistakenly shot dead by his companions, who allegedly mistook him for a wild boar. Another villager was injured in the incident, which occurred on January 28. Six individuals have been detained in connection with the case.

According to Palghar’s Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Abhijit Dharashivkar, a group of villagers entered the Borsheti forest area in Manor to hunt wild boars. During the trip, some members got separated from the group. One hunter reportedly mistook them for wild boars and opened fire, hitting two villagers. One died on the spot, while the other suffered serious injuries.

In a panic, the group allegedly hid the deceased’s body in the bushes instead of informing the police. Acting on a tip-off, authorities launched an investigation and detained six suspects. On Wednesday, after an extensive search, the police recovered the victim’s highly decomposed body and sent it for a postmortem to determine the exact cause of death.
