Catch the Snow Moon Tonight: Viewing Tips for India, February 12, 2025
The term “snow moon” refers to the second full moon of winter, a name historically attributed to it by various Native American tribes in the United States, as noted by NASA.
The full moon, referred to as the Snow Moon, will grace the night sky today, February 12.
The Snow Moon is set to be visible beginning Wednesday evening, achieving its fullest brightness at 8:53 am EST (7:23 pm IST), as reported by Space.com. It will rise in the eastern sky around sunset and will reach its zenith by midnight. Should you miss the spectacle on Wednesday, there will be another chance to view it on Thursday night.
In addition to the Snow Moon, there are other remarkable celestial phenomena to observe. With a backyard telescope or even with the naked eye, you can catch sight of Venus, Jupiter, and Mars. Simply look towards the eastern sky near the horizon at sunrise for the best view.
The full moon occurs when the moon is situated directly opposite the sun from the perspective of Earth, resulting in its complete illumination by sunlight. There are instances when the moon enters Earth’s shadow, leading to a lunar eclipse. Nevertheless, the full moon in February will not enter Earth’s shadow because the moon’s orbit is tilted approximately five degrees in relation to Earth’s orbital plane, which hinders the exact alignment of the sun, Earth, and moon.
On the evenings of February 11 and 13, you may observe the moon, which will still appear nearly full. It is expected to rise above the eastern horizon around sunset, and by midnight, it will attain its peak position in the sky.
Wednesday, February. 12 is the best time to watch the full snow moon. It will appear at its best as it rises on the eastern horizon just after sunset in the west.
