Chain Snatchers Target Elderly Women Across Pune
Pune: Two Bike-Borne Men Snatch ₹1.5 Lakh Gold Chain From 44-Year-Old Woman In Wanowrie
Pune: A surge in chain-snatching incidents has been reported across the city, with elderly women being the primary targets. In multiple cases, thieves on two-wheelers have snatched gold jewelry worth approximately ₹4.5 lakh from pedestrians in bustling areas such as Bhavani Peth, Erandwane, Warje, and Chaturshringi.
In Bhavani Peth’s Lohar Market, a senior woman was robbed of a gold mangalsutra worth ₹1.5 lakh by bike-borne thieves on February 15. The victim, who resides near Palakhi Vitthal Mandir Chowk, was walking with her husband when the snatchers struck and fled before help could arrive. She later filed a complaint at Khadak police station.
A similar incident occurred near Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Erandwane on February 16, where a senior woman waiting for an auto-rickshaw was robbed of a ₹50,000 gold chain. The victim, a resident of Balajinagar, reported the theft at Alankar police station.
In Warje’s Atul Nagar, another case was reported around 7:30 PM on February 16, where bike-borne snatchers stole a mangalsutra worth ₹1.5 lakh from a woman waiting with her husband for an auto-rickshaw. A complaint was lodged at Warje Malwadi police station.
A separate incident took place in the Queen’s Tower Society area under the Chatushringi police jurisdiction, where an elderly woman was robbed of her ₹1.5 lakh gold chain while standing outside her residential complex.
Authorities are investigating these incidents, with police officers from different stations, including Sub-Inspectors Abhijit Pawar, Mahesh Nimbalkar, and Narendra Patil, leading the inquiries. The recent spike in chain-snatching cases has raised concerns about public safety, especially for elderly pedestrians.
