Chef Garima Arora Makes History as First Indian Woman to Receive Two Michelin Stars
Chef Garima Arora has made history by becoming the first Indian woman to receive two Michelin stars. Her restaurant, Gaa, in Bangkok, was awarded its second star at the Michelin Guide Thailand Star Revelation 2024 on December 13, 2023.
This achievement cements Arora’s place among the world’s top chefs. “I am honoured to receive this award. It is a testament to our team’s hard work and our commitment to showcasing Indian cuisine globally,” she said. She also shared how balancing her career with motherhood has been challenging but rewarding.
Gaa, known for its modern take on Indian cuisine, first earned a Michelin star in 2018. The restaurant blends traditional flavours with contemporary techniques. According to the Michelin Guide, her dishes stand out for their “extraordinary flavour combinations, contrasts in texture and temperature, and finely judged spicing.”
Arora’s journey in the culinary world began at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, where she earned a grand diploma in culinary and patisserie in 2010. She has worked with top chefs like Gaggan Anand, Gordon Ramsay, and René Redzepi of Noma.
In 2019, Gaa made a stunning debut at No. 16 on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list and won the Highest New Entry Award. The same year, she was named Asia’s Best Female Chef by the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Chefs Vikas Khanna and Ranveer Brar joined in celebrating her achievement on social media. Arora’s success marks a significant milestone for women in the culinary industry.
