Bank Closures in February 2025: Mahashivratri and Regional Holidays Affect Multiple States
Customers are encouraged to complete their banking tasks ahead of time. Nevertheless, online banking and digital services will remain available.
Banks in various cities will observe closures for two days this week, although these days are not consecutive. The closures are in observance of Mahashivratri 2025 and a regional holiday.
Banks in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Jammu-Srinagar, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Himachal Pradesh will observe a closure on February 26, 2025, in celebration of Mahashivratri. Additionally, bank branches in Gangtok will be closed on February 28 for the Losar festival.
Nevertheless, mobile and internet banking services will continue without interruption, although some branches will be closed due to bank holidays. All in all, there were a total of 14 holidays in February.
It is important to understand that banks will not be closed on the same days across all states or regions. The list indicates the total number of days when banks will observe state-specific holidays. For example, banks will be closed for Loosong/Namsoong in Aizawl and Gangtok, but this holiday will not apply in other states.
The Reserve Bank of India categorizes its holidays into three groups: Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts. It’s important to recognize that bank holidays differ across states and are not uniformly observed by all banking institutions. Additionally, these holidays are influenced by local festivals and specific occasions recognized in each state.
Banks remain closed during all national and local holidays, birth anniversaries, Sundays, as well as on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. However, all bank branches operate on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays.
