PUNE: In a bid to modernize traffic management, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the city’s traffic police are launching a mobile application that will allow officers to control traffic signals in real-time. This initiative aims to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and facilitate the smooth movement of emergency vehicles.

The decision was made during a recent high-level meeting between PMC and traffic police officials. The new system will be implemented in phases, starting with key junctions before expanding across the city.

The app will enable traffic officers to manually adjust signal timings, allowing them to override standard cycles when necessary. This is expected to significantly improve traffic conditions, especially during peak hours and emergencies. Initially, 125 signals will be integrated with the system, excluding those under the Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS), which already operates on automated adjustments.

One of the key benefits of this system is its ability to give priority to ambulances and other emergency vehicles, ensuring quicker passage through congested intersections. Additionally, the app will help ease traffic congestion by enabling real-time changes at signals, reducing unnecessary delays for commuters.

Before its citywide rollout, the system underwent a successful trial, prompting authorities to implement it at five major junctions in Pune as part of the first phase. According to PMC electrical department, the mobile app was chosen over remote-controlled devices to prevent issues related to loss or misplacement.

If the pilot phase proves effective, the system will be expanded to more junctions, aligning with Pune’s broader smart city initiatives aimed at enhancing urban mobility and traffic efficiency.
