Pune, July 24, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to dismantle the long-defunct mechanical parking facility located near Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden on Jangli Maharaj Road, bringing an end to a project that cost nearly ₹2.5 crore but remained unused for years.
The unused steel structure has deteriorated significantly due to a lack of maintenance and has now been declared unsafe, prompting the civic administration to initiate its demolition. A proposal seeking approval from the Standing Committee has been submitted for awarding the dismantling contract.
PMC has recommended accepting the lowest bid submitted by Sparktech Engineering, which quoted ₹29,000 per metric tonne (inclusive of GST) for removing the steel structure.
According to civic officials, the mechanical parking system could not be operated because the corporation failed to find a technically qualified contractor for its maintenance, repairs, and operation. Over the years, the structure corroded extensively, raising serious safety concerns for pedestrians and visitors to the park.
A technical assessment by PMC concluded that restoring the facility would require substantial investment, while the expected revenue from operating the parking system would not justify the repair costs. Based on this cost-benefit analysis, the administration declared the project financially unviable and decided to remove the entire structure.
The Municipal Commissioner granted administrative approval for the demolition on May 21, 2026.
PMC had invited bids for the dismantling work through the B-2 tender process on May 19, 2026. A total of seven bids were received, of which four qualified in the technical evaluation. Sparktech Engineering emerged as the lowest bidder, and the civic body has now placed a proposal before the Standing Committee to approve the contract.
Metro Declined to Use the Facility
The mechanical parking structure had also been considered for use by MahaMetro, as it is located adjacent to the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Garden Metro Station. Discussions had been underway for nearly two years to transfer the facility for metro-related parking.
However, the proposal was dropped because the parking system was designed for older and smaller passenger vehicles. It is incompatible with today’s larger cars, and even after repairs, the parking capacity would have been significantly reduced. Consequently, PMC concluded that retaining the facility was impractical and opted to dismantle it entirely.
