Pune: PMC To Draft 25-Year Water Treatment Master Plan
Pune, July 24, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been directed to prepare a 25-year master plan for the city’s water treatment infrastructure, with a focus on upgrading ageing treatment plants and ensuring a reliable supply of safe drinking water to meet Pune’s growing population.
The directive was issued by Standing Committee Chairman Shrinath Bhimale during a review meeting on Thursday following concerns over the condition of the Parvati Water Treatment Plant, where ageing machinery has reportedly contributed to recent complaints of muddy and turbid water supply in several parts of the city.
The review came after civic officials conducted an inspection of the Parvati plant last week on Bhimale’s instructions in response to repeated complaints from residents. According to the inspection report, outdated equipment at the facility is operating under significant stress, reducing the efficiency of the water treatment process.
Highlighting the need for long-term planning, Bhimale said Pune’s rapid urban expansion and rising water demand require a comprehensive strategy to strengthen the city’s water treatment infrastructure over the next 25 years.
He instructed the civic administration to prepare an integrated master plan that includes the modernisation of the Parvati and Lashkar Water Treatment Plants as top priorities. He also emphasised that the proposed new water treatment plant at Lashkar should be completed within the prescribed timeline.
According to PMC officials, the review also identified the need to increase treatment capacity at the Lashkar facility through the construction of a new treatment plant. The civic body has already submitted a proposal worth ₹810 crore to the Maharashtra government for the project.
The Standing Committee has directed the administration to expedite the modernisation of existing plants while accelerating the tendering and execution process for the new Lashkar water treatment facility.
The proposed long-term master plan is expected to serve as a roadmap for strengthening Pune’s water infrastructure, improving treatment efficiency, and ensuring sustainable drinking water supply for the city’s expanding population over the next two decades.
