Pune’s Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park Battles Heatwave with Cooling Systems & Diet Changes
With rising temperatures in Pune, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Katraj has taken steps to protect its animals from the heat. The zoo has installed cooling equipment, modified diets, and increased water supply to ensure their well-being.
According to the Bridge Chronicle, to maintain a comfortable environment, the zoo has installed rain guns, coolers, and fans in enclosures. Large animals, especially elephants, are being bathed multiple times a day. Water is also being sprayed inside moats and enclosures to regulate temperatures. Greenery within the premises is regularly watered to maintain a cool and natural habitat.
Herbivores are receiving fresh green fodder and seasonal fruits. Animals are also being given electrolyte-enhanced water to prevent dehydration. Regular health check-ups and diet monitoring are being conducted to ensure their well-being.
Spread over 130 acres, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park is home to 427 animals, including lions, tigers, leopards, wolves, bears, elephants, blackbucks, deer, crocodiles, and snakes. The zoo also features a lake and diverse flora, ensuring a sustainable habitat for its wildlife. Authorities continue to monitor conditions to keep all animals safe and comfortable this summer.
