Registering for HSRP? Verify the Website to Avoid Cyber Fraud, Says Transport Department
Beware! Fake HSRP Website Dupes Vehicle Owners, Complaint Filed With Cyber Police Complaint Filed In Pune
Mumbai – Vehicle owners registering for High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) online must be cautious, as cybercriminals have been found deceiving users through fraudulent websites and fake links. The Transport Department has warned citizens to use only the official website for HSRP registration. So far, cases have been filed against six fake websites.
Official Website Registration Advised
The Transport Department has emphasized the importance of verifying the website before proceeding with HSRP registration. Cybercriminals have created fake websites and links, tricking vehicle owners into paying fraudulent charges. Following multiple complaints, a case has been registered at the South Division Cyber Police Station based on the Transport Department’s report.
HSRP Mandatory as per Supreme Court Orders
The Supreme Court has mandated HSRP installation for all vehicles to enhance national security, prevent crimes involving vehicles, and curb the use of fake number plates. In Maharashtra, this rule applies to all vehicles manufactured before April 1, 2019, and the Transport Department has begun implementing it.
Cyber Fraud Cases on the Rise
Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) across the state have received multiple complaints from vehicle owners about fraudulent HSRP registrations. In response, the Transport Commissioner’s office has lodged an official complaint with the Cyber Police Station, which has now initiated an investigation. So far, six fraudulent websites have been identified.
Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar has urged vehicle owners to complete their HSRP registration only through the official portals designated for the process. To streamline registration, the department has authorized three official agencies and provided their links online. However, within the last two days, cybercriminals have created additional fake websites, leading to further fraud cases.
Upon receiving reports from the authorized HSRP agencies, the Assistant Transport Commissioner immediately filed a complaint with the Cyber Police, who have now launched a technical investigation into the fraudulent activities.
Vehicle Owners Advised to Stay Cautious
Vehicle owners are strongly advised to avoid unverified websites and ensure they are registering only through the official portals provided by the Transport Department to prevent falling victim to online fraud.
