A shocking case of alleged child abuse has emerged from Bengaluru after videos surfaced showing toddlers being subjected to inhuman treatment at a daycare centre operating inside the HAL campus of Capgemini. The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with police registering a case against five women caregivers and child protection authorities launching an investigation.

According to the complaint, children aged between two and three years were allegedly forced to sit inside the drum of a front-loading washing machine, locked inside bathrooms and sprayed with water using a toilet jet whenever they cried. The videos, which have gone viral on social media, reportedly prompted complaints to both the police and the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

Police have booked five caregivers under relevant provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act and other applicable laws. Investigators are examining the videos and recording statements as part of the ongoing probe.

The daycare facility was being used by employees working at the IT company’s campus, with many parents entrusting it with the care of their young children during office hours. The alleged abuse has raised serious questions about supervision, monitoring and accountability in corporate childcare facilities.

In a statement, Capgemini said the health, safety and well-being of its employees and their families remain its highest priority. The company said it is fully cooperating with the authorities and has temporarily closed the Bengaluru on-campus daycare facility as a precautionary measure while the investigation continues.

The incident has also renewed calls for stricter regulation of daycare centres, including mandatory CCTV monitoring, regular staff background verification, surprise inspections and better grievance redressal mechanisms to ensure the safety of children.

How Can Daycare Centres Prevent Such Incidents?

Child safety experts say daycare centres can significantly reduce the risk of abuse by following strict safety protocols:

  • Install CCTV cameras covering all activity areas and allow parents regulated access to recordings where permitted.
  • Conduct thorough police verification and background checks of all caregivers before hiring.
  • Train staff regularly in child protection, first aid, emergency response and positive behaviour management.
  • Maintain an adequate caregiver-to-child ratio to ensure proper supervision.
  • Carry out surprise audits and periodic inspections by independent authorities.
  • Establish a zero-tolerance policy towards physical or emotional abuse and encourage prompt reporting of complaints.
  • Maintain transparent communication with parents regarding daily activities, incidents and safety measures.
