A major road accident involving a school vehicle in Bihar’s Aurangabad district has left 13 schoolchildren injured, three of them critically, after a school van lost control and plunged nearly 15 feet into a canal on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred near Tamsi Turn on the Amba–Navinagar Road when a Magic van carrying students of St. Xavier’s High School, Amba, veered off the road while transporting children from nearby villages, including Kutumba, Lakhna, Mahua Dham and Mirpur.

According to officials, local residents rushed to the spot immediately after the crash and rescued the trapped children before they were shifted to Kutumba Referral Hospital. Doctors provided first aid to all the injured students, while RB Pratap, Harsh Kumar and Mouli Kumari were referred to Aurangabad Sadar Hospital after their condition was found to be critical.

The injured children are between 5 and 13 years of age.

Police said the driver allegedly fled the scene immediately after the accident. A search has been launched to trace him, while an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash.

The incident has triggered anger among parents, many of whom alleged that the school was using an old vehicle and carrying more children than its permitted seating capacity. Family members claimed that concerns over school transport safety had been raised earlier but were not adequately addressed.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the vehicle was overloaded or whether mechanical failure contributed to the accident. Officials said all aspects, including the driver’s conduct, vehicle fitness and compliance with transport norms, will be examined before fixing responsibility.

The accident has once again drawn attention to the importance of safe school transportation, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where children often travel long distances every day.

Road safety experts say that many school vehicle accidents can be prevented through regular maintenance, trained drivers, strict compliance with seating capacity and continuous monitoring by school authorities.

How Schools Can Reduce the Risk of Such Accidents

Schools can strengthen student safety by adopting a comprehensive transport safety policy that includes:

• Conducting mandatory fitness inspections of every school vehicle at regular intervals.

• Employing only licensed and specially trained drivers with verified backgrounds and experience in transporting children.

• Ensuring that vehicles never carry more children than their approved seating capacity.

• Installing GPS tracking systems, speed governors and CCTV cameras to monitor vehicle movement and driver behaviour.

• Carrying out daily pre-trip inspections of brakes, tyres, steering, lights and emergency exits before vehicles leave school premises.

• Appointing a trained attendant in every school bus or van to supervise children during the journey.

• Preparing emergency response plans and conducting mock drills so that drivers, attendants and school staff know how to respond during an accident.

• Maintaining updated contact details of parents and establishing a system for immediate communication during emergencies.

• Periodically reviewing transport routes, especially those passing through narrow roads, canals, construction zones or accident-prone stretches.

Education experts also recommend that schools regularly interact with parents to review transport safety measures and encourage them to report concerns about speeding, reckless driving or overcrowding without delay.

As police continue their investigation, the Aurangabad accident serves as another reminder that school transportation is not merely a logistical service but a critical responsibility where strict adherence to safety standards can make the difference between a safe journey and a tragedy.
