1 July, 2026: Travelling between Mumbai and Vadodara is set to become quicker as the 157-km Maharashtra stretch of the Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway is expected to open by August 31. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has confirmed that the project is on track for completion by the end of August.

The expressway is part of the 1,400-km Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, one of India’s largest road infrastructure projects. Once the Maharashtra section becomes operational, the travel time between Mumbai and Vadodara is expected to reduce from around eight hours to nearly four hours.

Officials said the 157-km stretch has been divided into seven construction packages. Work on five packages has already been completed, while the remaining two are in the final stages and are expected to be ready before the deadline.

The eight-lane, access-controlled expressway has been designed to offer faster and smoother travel by restricting slow-moving local traffic. The Maharashtra stretch has been built at an estimated cost of ₹24,000 crore.

The new expressway is also expected to improve connectivity in areas such as Palghar and Vasai-Virar, which could boost residential and commercial development. Better road access is likely to increase demand for housing and attract new investments in these regions.

The Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway forms an important part of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which connects Delhi with Mumbai through Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. Several stretches in other states are already open, and the completion of the Maharashtra section will bring the mega project one step closer to full operation.
