Pune: The case of a diamond trader’s alleged abduction for a ₹2 crore ransom took an unexpected turn when he appeared at the Bibwewadi police station on Friday evening. The businessman admitted to staging his own kidnapping due to financial distress and harassment from creditors.

Residing in a society in Bibwewadi, the trader had left home on Monday after dropping his daughter at school, informing his wife that he had work in the Camp area. Later, an unidentified caller informed his wife that he had been kidnapped for ransom. Upon receiving the complaint, police launched an immediate investigation, discovering his abandoned two-wheeler near Navale Bridge, adding to the mystery.

Under the supervision of Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, teams were deployed to Mumbai and Bengaluru for the search. The trader had switched off his phone, making it difficult to track him. However, on Friday afternoon, he briefly contacted his sister before turning off his phone again. Eventually, he surrendered at the police station and confessed to fleeing due to creditor pressure. He revealed that he had traveled from Navale Bridge to Ravet, then to Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai, and later stayed at a lodge in Mumbai Central and Khar for two days.
