Airtel Partners With Elon Musk’s SpaceX to Bring Starlink Satellite Internet to India
New Delhi: Bharti Airtel has signed an agreement with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet services to India. This marks the first such deal in the country, pending regulatory approvals for SpaceX to operate Starlink commercially in India.
As part of the collaboration, Airtel and SpaceX will explore opportunities to provide Starlink equipment through Airtel’s retail outlets, extend Starlink services to businesses, and enhance connectivity for remote communities, schools, and healthcare centers across India.
“Partnering with SpaceX to offer Starlink services is a major milestone in our commitment to next-generation satellite connectivity,” said Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Vice Chairman of Bharti Airtel Ltd.
Starlink, owned by SpaceX, is a satellite internet network designed to deliver global broadband connectivity, enabling seamless streaming, video calls, online gaming, and remote work, even in the most remote locations.
“This collaboration strengthens our ability to provide high-speed broadband access to every individual, business, and community in India. Starlink will complement Airtel’s existing services to ensure reliable and affordable internet connectivity,” Vittal added.
Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, emphasized Airtel’s significant role in India’s telecom industry and expressed enthusiasm for the partnership. “We are thrilled to work with Airtel to bring Starlink’s transformative connectivity to the people of India. The impact of reliable internet access on communities is truly inspiring,” she said.
Currently, Reliance Jio dominates India’s broadband sector, boasting over 14 million wired subscribers and nearly 500 million mobile internet users. Airtel, with close to 300 million broadband customers, faces a competitive landscape as satellite internet technology advances, potentially reshaping the industry.
