The residents of Pimpri-Chinchwad are facing a serious water crisis, with thousands of families struggling to access enough water for their daily needs. The problem is particularly acute in areas like Moshi, Chikhali, Boradewadi, Dudulgaon, Jadhavwadi, and Charholi, where residents have been experiencing significantly reduced water supply at low pressure for the past week.

These areas, home to over 2 lakh people, rely on the Nighoj water supply system and Andra Dam for their water needs, receiving approximately 100 million liters per day (MLD). However, due to a sharp decline in water stock, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has been able to lift only 40 MLD, leading to the current water shortage.

“We haven’t received any water for the past three days. We’re now relying on private tankers, which are charging us very high rates. The authorities need to take immediate action to fix the water supply,” said a Moshi resident.

An affected resident stated, “Until the regular supply is restored, the PCMC must find alternative solutions, like bringing in more tankers or finding other water sources. We are going to send a letter to the PCMC officials demanding urgent action.”

Another resident from Chikhali, shared, “We get water only on alternate days. Every morning, we wake up wondering if there will be water in our taps. The low water pressure is not enough to fill our society’s tanks, and with the summer heat, the situation is becoming unbearable.”

A PCMC official confirmed the water shortage, explaining that water for this area comes from Nighoj, which has been supplied by Andra Dam for the past year and a half.

“PCMC lifts about 100 MLD of water from Nighoj daily, but the water levels have significantly decreased, resulting in a reduced supply to residents. Some homes may not receive water at all due to low pressure. However, the PCMC is coordinating with the irrigation department to resolve the issue,” he said.

He also mentioned that the irrigation department has increased the water supply, but it will take four to five days for it to reach the Pimpri-Chinchwad area. “The problem should be resolved in the next few days,” he added.
