Pune News: Fatal Accidents Pile Up In Undri – Will PMC Wake Up Before More Lives Are Lost ?

On April 1, 2025, a tragic accident in Undri claimed the life of a 49-year-old runner, who was hit by a speeding four-wheeler, marking yet another instance of negligence by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) towards the safety and infrastructure of this growing locality. Despite residents’ repeated appeals, PMC has failed to address key issues, leaving Undri’s residents living in unsafe conditions despite paying high property taxes.

Undri, which was merged into PMC limits in 2017, still lacks a comprehensive Development Plan (DP), leaving its residents to cope with substandard infrastructure and basic amenities. The area, which boasts ample open spaces perfect for morning and evening walks, remains dangerously underdeveloped, with no action taken by PMC in the eight years since its merger.

This tragic incident is not isolated. Just two months ago, on January 9, 2025, Dr. Pranali Date, a 34-year-old doctor, also lost her life in a fatal accident caused by a speeding truck. These accidents are exacerbated by poor road conditions, heavy traffic congestion, and the absence of proper safety measures.

The Mohammadwadi Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation has been raising concerns through letters and social media but has yet to see meaningful action from PMC. The area continues to face issues such as inadequate water supply, missing drainage systems, and lack of healthcare facilities.

With the population of Undri steadily growing, housing over approximately 15,000 families and home to 13 schools and many more coming up, the demand for improved infrastructure has never been more urgent. Residents are now demanding immediate action from PMC to improve road safety and infrastructure, and to honor the promises made at the time of the merger.

The question remains: how many more lives must be lost before PMC addresses the long-standing issues faced by Undri residents?

Mohammadwadi-Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation in its statement said, “As an organization representing the residents of Undri and Mohammadwadi, we have been tirelessly voicing our concerns. The time has come for the angry citizens of this area to unite and hold PMC, elected representatives, and developers accountable for the mess they have created. Today’s tragic accident is a wake-up call that demands immediate attention. We demand that the just needs of the tax-paying citizens be met. For over 20 years, we’ve seen rampant construction with no basic infrastructure in place—no roads, water, power, footpaths, or playgrounds. The lack of a Development Plan since 2017 and an unholy nexus is ruining the environment.

We urge PMC to take swift action:

  1. A senior team from PMC should visit the area to create a roadmap.
  2. Approve the DP plan immediately.
  3. Implement a moratorium on further construction until basic services are provided.
  4. Provide essential infrastructure like roads, footpaths, water, sewerage, and power.
  5. Stop collecting property taxes until these basics are in place.”

Deepa Cheema of Mohamadwadi Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation (MURWDF) said, “This is another heartbreaking tragedy, just like the earlier incident involving a young lady doctor on a two-wheeler. At @MURWDFoundation, we have been tirelessly raising our concerns and submitting complaints to various authorities, yet no action has been taken so far. The lack of urgency and response from the responsible parties is both frustrating and alarming. @CPPuneCity, when will this reckless driving end? We demand immediate intervention to ensure the safety of our residents. The time for change is now, before more lives are lost.”

Sunil Koloti, a resident of Undri said, “Another life lost due to the neglect of basic infrastructure in Undri. It’s not just an accident—it’s the result of years of inaction by the PMC. As a resident who has witnessed this community struggle, I can’t help but wonder how many more lives need to be tragically cut short before authorities finally act. Our roads should be safe for pedestrians, not just for vehicles. The lack of speed breakers, CCTV, and proper road infrastructure is a glaring failure. We demand immediate action from PMC—speed breakers, CCTV, road repairs, and, most importantly, pedestrian safety measures.”

Falgun, another resident of Undri said, “Another victim of bad governance in Undri! It’s heartbreaking to witness how many more innocent souls will have to be sacrificed before #PMC finally opens its eyes. The lack of action and accountability is costing lives. When will this end?”

Until basic amenities are in place, #PMC must halt all upcoming projects in this area, commented a resident.

Another resident of Undri stated, “The failure of governance in our area is entirely due to politics. Elections should be banned until real development happens. We must file a petition in the High Court—no facilities, no tax! Right now, #PMC is extorting citizens under the guise of taxes, while the police remain inactive. Enough is enough!”
