The arrival of the highly sought-after Hapus mangoes, also known as Alphonso, has boomed at Pune’s Market Yard since the Gudi Padwa festival. The daily supply has more than doubled, jumping from 1,000 to 2,000 crates last week to a whopping 4,000 to 5,000 crates now. However, the post-festival dip in demand has caused mango prices to take a tumble.

The price of Hapus mangoes has taken a significant dip compared to last week, dropping by ₹300 to ₹600 per dozen depending on the quality. Retailers are now selling a dozen mangoes for ₹700 to ₹1,200, down from ₹1,000 to ₹1,800 last week.

Unpredictable weather in the Konkan region has significantly impacted this year’s mango harvest, resulting in an estimated 40% reduction in production compared to usual levels. The initial flowering phase saw a lower yield, leading to limited arrivals at the start of the season. While Gudi Padwa traditionally sees a peak in mango supply, this year, arrivals were initially lower, increasing only after the festival.

While cloudy weather has blanketed Maharashtra, traders have indicated that this doesn’t pose an immediate threat to the mango crop. However, concerns remain about potential storms and heavy rainfall, which could lead to widespread fruit drop and further reduce supply. Market experts predict that the availability of mangoes in the coming weeks will largely depend on the weather conditions.
