Pune, April 8: The city of Pune is grappling with an intense heatwave as temperatures soared to record-breaking levels on Monday. Lohegaon recorded a blistering 42.2 degrees Celsius — the highest temperature in Pune so far this summer — while Koregaon Park followed closely with 41.1°C.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), as many as eight locations in the Pune district, including Lohegaon, Koregaon Park, Pashan, Shivajinagar, Hadapsar, Dhamdhere, Rajgurunagar, and Shirur, recorded maximum temperatures at or above 40°C.

The Shivajinagar observatory, which serves as Pune’s official weather station, recorded 40.2°C, making April 7 the hottest day of the season so far.

The IMD has forecast that the heatwave will persist for the next two to three days, with temperatures expected to remain above normal due to the absence of any strong weather system over Maharashtra. Dry weather conditions are likely to prevail across the state.

The heatwave is not limited to Pune alone. Several parts of Maharashtra, including Central Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha, are witnessing extreme heat. Akola in Vidarbha recorded the highest temperature in the state at 44.2°C, followed by Brahmapuri (43.8°C), and Chandrapur and Amravati (both 43.6°C).

In Central Maharashtra, apart from Pune, other regions such as Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, Malegaon, Nashik, and Solapur also reported temperatures above 40°C.

“Dry weather across Maharashtra has caused a significant rise in maximum temperatures,” said S D Sanap, Senior Meteorologist at IMD Pune. “Some areas in Konkan and North Maharashtra are likely to experience heatwave conditions in the next 48 hours, for which a yellow alert has been issued.”

For Pune, the IMD has forecast high temperatures to continue on April 8 and 9. Partly cloudy conditions are expected on April 9 and 10. A heatwave warning remains in place for parts of the state, with daytime temperatures in Pune likely to stay above 40°C. A safety advisory has also been issued for residents.
