Four Arrested For Online Horse Racing Betting In Pune; Wanawadi Police Seize Equipment

Pune: Wanawadi Police have arrested four individuals for engaging in illegal online betting on horse races, an activity banned under Indian law. Acting on a tip-off, police raided a flat in the Fatimanagar area where the accused were operating an online betting network linked to horse races at the Mumbai racecourse.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Mehmood Ibrahim Shaikh, Faiz Mehmood Shaikh (29), both residents of Fatimanagar, Chand Shamshuddin Shaikh (29) from Wanwadi, and Akbar Anwar Khan (46) from Lashkar. The police seized mobile phones used for betting and a racing book, amounting to a total seizure worth ₹55,000.

The operation was led under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police Dr. Rajkumar Shinde, with Senior Police Inspector Satyajit Adamane and Sub-Inspector Dhanaji Tone heading the team. The investigation was initiated following a complaint by police constable Somnath Kamble.

During the raid, it was discovered that Faiz, Chand, and Akbar were placing bets on their mobile phones. Faiz later revealed that his father Mehmood was handling all transactions related to the betting operations. It was further uncovered that bettors would receive their winnings after the races concluded, with payments being processed every Monday from Mumbai.

The entire betting operation was being run online via mobile phones. A case has been registered under the Maharashtra Gambling Prohibition Act, and further investigation is underway under the supervision of Inspector Satyajit Adamane.
