Modi Government Launches Aadhaar Face ID App with QR Code Verification for Seamless Digital Identity Check
New Aadhaar app promises UPI-style ease of identity verification using facial recognition and QR code, eliminating the need for physical cards.
In a major push towards digital governance and secure identity management, the Modi government has launched a new Aadhaar app powered by Face ID and QR code verification. Developed in collaboration with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the app aims to simplify Aadhaar authentication using smartphones, much like the convenience of UPI payments.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw officially announced the launch of the Aadhaar app on Tuesday, calling it a “revolutionary” step in India’s digital transformation. Sharing the update on his social media handle (formerly Twitter), Vaishnaw emphasized that the new app leverages facial recognition technology and artificial intelligence to facilitate instant and secure identity verification.

“Aadhaar verification becomes as simple as making a UPI payment,” Vaishnaw stated.
Key Features of the Aadhaar App:
- Face ID Authentication: Allows users to verify their Aadhaar identity using facial recognition on their smartphones.
- QR Code Verification: Enables quick, contactless verification by scanning QR codes at various touchpoints like hotel receptions, retail outlets, and airports.
- 100% Digital and Consent-Based: The app ensures users have full control over when and where they share their Aadhaar information.

With this app, Indian citizens will no longer need to carry physical Aadhaar cards or submit photocopies for identity checks. The minister highlighted its practical use cases for everyday scenarios such as hotel check-ins, shopping, and travel.
“No need to hand over Aadhaar photocopy at hotel receptions, shops or during travel. The Aadhaar App is secure and shareable only with the user’s consent,” he added.
Currently in its final beta testing phase, the Aadhaar Face ID app will soon be rolled out nationwide. Once launched, it is expected to significantly reduce the misuse of Aadhaar data and improve the speed and security of ID verification across multiple sectors.
