Pune Tragedy: Father and Son Die in Domestic Gas Cylinder Explosion
Pune, April 9: Two men were killed in a tragic LPG cylinder explosion at Gokulnagar in Pune’s Warje Malwadi area during the early hours of Wednesday. The blast, suspected to have been triggered by a minor electrical spark, resulted in a massive fire that quickly engulfed a tin-roofed house, police officials confirmed.
The deceased have been identified as Mohan Manik Chavan (43) and Atish Mohan Chavan (25). According to Warje police, the fire began around 1:50 am, and as fire brigade teams approached the site, the gas cylinder exploded due to rising temperatures inside the structure.
Fire units from Warje, Sinhagad, and Kothrud stations were immediately deployed and worked to douse the flames. Despite their efforts, the house was completely destroyed, and the blast was so intense that the LPG cylinder was shattered into fragments—an unusual occurrence, noted fire officer Prabhakar Umratkar.
The victims’ bodies were transported to Sassoon General Hospital for post-mortem examination.
A neighbouring house also suffered structural damage from the blast. Authorities have since directed residents in the surrounding area to evacuate temporarily as a precautionary measure while further safety inspections are conducted.
The Warje police have registered a case and launched a full investigation into the cause of the fire and the subsequent explosion.
