Pune: Over 400 residents from Undri and Mohamadwadi gathered on the evening of April 13, 2025, for a silent protest demanding urgent action from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Organised by the Mohamadwadi Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation, the protest was a collective outcry against 25 years of neglect.

Mohamadwadi was included in PMC limits in 1995 and Undri in 2017, yet basic civic infrastructure remains a distant dream. Residents continue to struggle with inconsistent water supply, lack of a Development Plan (DP) for Undri, poor garbage disposal, encroachments, bad roads, traffic chaos, and drainage issues. There are no public amenities like parks, playgrounds, or community centres, and citizens face inflated property taxes with nothing in return.

Despite repeated complaints to PMC and appeals to local MLA and MP, no concrete action has been taken. The residents gathered today not out of choice, but out of compulsion — to demand their right to live with dignity and safety. The peaceful protest served as a powerful message to the authorities that the voices of Undri and Mohamadwadi will no longer be ignored.

“I have been a resident of Nyati Estate of 20 years and seen this area deteriorate in every aspect. Multiple residential projects with no proper infrastructure is the main problem. The residents are paying regular taxes for what? No basic amenities like water, drainage, roads. Our organization MURWDF has put in lot of efforts to reach out to concerned authorities, but unfortunately there has been no major change or difference. So far it was deprivation of basic amenities…but now we are fighting to save our lives. We have lost 2 lives due to reckless driving and accidents are a regular feature here. We are protesting in peace and demanding Change. We will not wait anymore. If this doesn’t work then we will take it forward in legal way. It’s a WAKEUP alarm for all the authorities, ” said Deepa Cheema, Founder Director, Mohamadwadi Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation (MURWDF).

I’ve been a resident of Undri since 2005-06 — nearly two decades — and what was once a serene and promising locality has turned into a tale of neglect and unfulfilled promises. From being under the Gram Panchayat to now under PMC, there has been no significant improvement, only escalating taxes and unplanned growth. We still lack piped water, sewerage lines, and proper roads, and basic amenities remain a distant dream. As a retired citizen, I had hoped for peace and dignity — instead, we are left frustrated and unheard. The authorities and developers must act now before the damage becomes irreversible. It’s now or never, “ said Suniel Aiyer, Resident of Nyati Chesterfield Society & Director, Mohamadwadi Undri Residents Welfare Development Foundation.

Sajeev Nair, Resident of Nyati Serenity Enclave said “Despite paying exorbitant property taxes, we continue to live without even the most basic civic amenities—no proper roads, unreliable water supply, dysfunctional sewage systems, and a failing power infrastructure. Year after year, we’ve seen developers, bureaucrats, and politicians walk through our neighbourhoods with empty promises. Parties have changed. Commissioners have come and gone. But the apathy toward infrastructure remains constant. Now, this negligence is costing lives. A mother dies while dropping her child to school. A father of three loses his life during a morning walk. How many more lives must be lost before someone in power finally takes responsibility? We are not asking for luxuries—we’re demanding the bare minimum. The continued silence and inaction from those responsible is not just disappointing, it’s enraging. It’s time for the authorities to do their job. We are done being patient.”

Key demands of the protestors include:

  • Immediate Development Plan (DP) for Undri
  • Reliable, potable drinking water supply
  • Safe, wide roads and footpaths free of encroachments
  • Efficient drainage and sewage system
  • Regular police patrolling for safety
  • Public amenities like gardens, playgrounds, and community centres
  • Robust public transport network
  • Removal of hazardous encroachments, including high tension poles and roadside stalls
  • Comprehensive cleanliness and waste management measures
  • Street lighting across all key roads
  • Establishment of a state-of-the-art fire station
  • Initiatives to make Undri and Mohamadwadi clean and green

Joel Jacob, Resident of Ganga Glitz, Undri said “As a resident of Undri, I strongly feel that our area deserves immediate attention and action on several critical civic issues. We need better road infrastructure—widened and well-maintained internal roads, proper footpaths, and adequate street lighting. Public transport must improve too, with more frequent and accessible PMPML bus services that connect us effectively to the main city. Water supply continues to be a major concern. We should not have to rely so heavily on private tankers when regular and sufficient PMC water supply should be the norm. Waste management also needs a serious upgrade with efficient garbage collection, proper segregation, and responsible disposal systems. Safety cannot be compromised—our neighbourhoods need increased police patrolling, improved lighting, and CCTV surveillance in public spaces. We hope the PMC integration brings real benefits—faster implementation of civic amenities and inclusion in broader development plans. Undri deserves no less.”

Radiya Gohil, Resident of Godrej Prana, Undri said “As residents of Godrej Prana in Undri, we have been repeatedly raising concerns that remain unaddressed. We urgently need reliable water supply, a functioning drainage line, proper waste management, regular police patrolling, and well-planned street lighting to ensure safety and livability in our area. One of our most pressing concerns is the cement plants operating dangerously close to the lake. This is an absolute atrocity—posing a grave threat to our water table and public health. Senior citizens and children are breathing in polluted air daily. This is a serious health hazard, and we demand a thorough probe into the matter. We also strongly advocate for the development of Autadewadi lake area into a walking track with the lake as its centrepiece, encouraging biodiversity and enhancing the local ecosystem. Finally, traffic at the highway entry points into residential lanes must be better managed to ensure smoother and safer access. These are not luxuries—we are asking for essential, life-sustaining civic measures.”
