On Cam: Shikara Capsizes in Dal Lake; Four Family Members Rescued in Time
Sudden windstorm triggers scare on Dal Lake; incident raises questions on tourist safety measures
A pleasant Shikara ride turned into a moment of panic on Wednesday evening when a sudden windstorm caused a boat to capsize in the interiors of Dal Lake. Four members of a family, identified as tourists, were onboard when the incident occurred. Fortunately, all four were rescued safely.
According to officials, the family was reportedly playing and shaking the Shikara when the weather abruptly changed, causing the vessel to lose balance and overturn. The head of the family was identified as Shwetang Murkya.
Swift response by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local rescue teams ensured that all passengers were pulled out of the water quickly, avoiding any casualties. The capsized Shikara has since been handed over to the concerned authorities, and an investigation is underway to understand the exact sequence of events.

Safety Precautions to Follow During a Shikara Ride: To prevent such accidents in the future, travel agencies and local authorities recommend the following:
- Avoid riding during high winds or unstable weather conditions. Dal Lake is known for sudden weather shifts, especially during spring and monsoon seasons.
- Limit the number of people per Shikara – ideally, only 2 to 4 passengers should board at a time.
- Ensure life jackets are available and worn by all passengers, regardless of swimming ability.
- Avoid unnecessary movements or playful behavior that can destabilize the boat.
- Follow the Shikara operator’s safety instructions carefully.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder for tourists and operators alike to prioritize safety over thrill. With Dal Lake being a popular attraction, preventive measures and awareness can help preserve both joy and lives.
