Pune, May 6: In response to heightened tensions following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and increasing strain between India and Pakistan, the central government has ordered a nationwide civil defence mock drill to enhance citizen preparedness. As part of this initiative, a large-scale mock drill accompanied by warning sirens will be conducted on May 7 across 16 locations in Maharashtra.

This will be the most extensive civil defence exercise since 1971, and residents, especially those in housing societies, are urged to follow safety protocols once the siren is heard.

Here’s what Pune residents should do when the siren sounds:

Balwadkar

Switch Off All Lights:
Sirens are typically used to signal potential air raids. Turn off all household and office lights to avoid being targeted, as bright lights can reveal your location to enemies.

Move to Lower Floors or Safe Zones:
Immediately relocate to safer areas such as basements or designated parking areas. Avoid staying on higher floors during the alert.

Shut Down Electronic Devices:
Turn off mobile phones, TVs, Wi-Fi routers, and other electronic equipment if possible. If they must remain on, keep monitoring them for updates or safety alerts.

Assist the Injured:
If anyone is hurt during the drill, provide basic first aid and be prepared to transport them to the nearest hospital if required.

Stay Calm and Avoid Panic:
Remember, this is a mock drill designed to test emergency readiness. Do not spread rumours or act in fear. Follow only official instructions.

Purpose of the Mock Drill
The drill aims to test the emergency preparedness of citizens and ensure coordination between residents and administrative authorities. Pune’s housing societies are requested to cooperate fully and follow all directions from local officials.

Authorities emphasize that while the drill is a simulation, the response should be taken seriously to build habits for real-life emergencies.
