Mumbai, May 6: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai on May 6 and 7, forecasting light to moderate rain along with isolated thunderstorms. The alert urges caution as pre-monsoon activity intensifies across Maharashtra.
Meanwhile, orange alerts have been declared for six districts—Pune, Nashik, Jalgaon, Jalna, Satara, and Parbhani—for May 7, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours), thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 30–40 km/h. The IMD warns of potential damage to crops, disruption in power supply, and tree falls in these regions.
On May 6, strong winds and a dust storm hit Dhule, signaling an uptick in pre-monsoon activity. Social media visuals showed intense rain and wind sweeping through open streets and residential areas.
Coastal districts such as Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg remain under yellow alerts for May 6 and 7, with rainfall expected to taper off in the coming days. However, isolated showers and thunderstorms may persist in parts of the state.
The IMD’s yellow alert extends through May 10 in regions including Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ahmednagar, and Mumbai, suggesting the likelihood of evening thunderstorms and localized rain.
IMD Advisory:
- Residents in orange alert zones are advised to stay indoors during lightning, avoid open fields, and secure outdoor objects.
- Farmers should take preventive measures to safeguard crops from potential damage due to heavy rains and wind.
The IMD continues to monitor weather conditions and urges citizens to stay updated via official bulletins.
