Travel Time from Nashik to Mumbai to be Reduced to Just 2.5 Hours with Samruddhi Mahamarg’s Final Phase Inaugurated on May 1
A game-changer for Maharashtra’s western districts, cutting travel time, saving fuel, and boosting connectivity.
The much-anticipated Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg is finally set to open to full capacity, promising a massive reduction in travel time between Nagpur and Mumbai. The final 76-km stretch from Igatpuri to Amane (near Thane) will be inaugurated on May 1, Maharashtra Day, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi likely to officiate the opening during his Mumbai visit for the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit at BKC.
Once fully operational, the 701-km Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway will reduce the travel time between the two major cities from 16 hours to just 8 hours. For travelers between Nashik and Mumbai, the journey will shrink dramatically to just two and a half hours — a remarkable convenience compared to the earlier tedious commute.
This final phase is especially significant because it includes five tunnels spanning a total of 11 km. The most impressive is a 7.8 km-long tunnel, now recognized as the longest and widest tunnel in the country. Thanks to this engineering marvel, the journey from Igatpuri to Kasara — a stretch that earlier took almost an hour — will now take just eight minutes, making the journey much smoother and faster by bypassing the traffic-prone and hilly Kasara Ghat section.
The Samruddhi Highway is not just about saving time; it’s designed to save fuel and enhance economic opportunities for the western districts of Maharashtra by improving connectivity.
Timeline of Inaugurations:
- December 11, 2022: Phase 1 (Nagpur to Shirdi, 520 km) inaugurated by PM Modi.
- Later: Phase 2 (Shirdi to Bharvir Interchange, 80 km) inaugurated by CM Eknath Shinde.
- March 4, 2024: Phase 3 (Bharvir Interchange to Igatpuri, 25 km) opened.
- May 1, 2025: Final Phase (Igatpuri to Amane, 76 km) to be inaugurated.
Initially proposed in 2014 as one of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ most ambitious projects, the Samruddhi Mahamarg is poised to become a transformational expressway for Maharashtra, cutting across major cities and boosting overall development.
With this launch, the Samruddhi Mahamarg is set to become one of the country’s most crucial expressways, ushering in a new era of faster, safer, and more efficient travel in Maharashtra.
