Pune Metro Gears Up for Phase 2: Designs 14 Stations on Kharadi-Khadakwasla Route, Begins DPR for Airport Link

Pune Metro To Add 15 New Trains, 45 Coaches As Ridership Surges
State nod clears decks for Phase 2; central approval awaited for launch
With the first phase of Pune Metro nearing completion, authorities have initiated groundwork for Phase 2 by starting the design of 14 elevated stations on the 25.8-km Kharadi-Khadakwasla corridor. Simultaneously, preparations have begun for a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to connect Kharadi to Pune Airport and develop a spur line to Kondhwa, Yewalewadi, and Undri.
In October 2024, the Maharashtra government approved the DPR for Phase 2 of the Pune Metro, which includes:
- Route 1: Khadakwasla to Kharadi via Swargate and Hadapsar
- Length: 25.8 km | Stations: 22 | Estimated Cost: ₹8,131 crore
- Route 2: Nal Stop to Manik Baug via Warje
- Length: 6 km | Stations: 6 | Estimated Cost: ₹1,765 crore
The proposal currently awaits final approval from the central government.
“The Pune Metro has begun detailed design consultancy services for 14 elevated stations on the Kharadi-Khadakwasla corridor. This early-stage planning is vital for saving time once central approval is granted,” said Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director, Pune Metro Rail. He added that Phase 1 work is in its final stages, with the Khadki station and a foot overbridge across the Mutha River nearing completion.
Sonawane also confirmed that Pune Metro is preparing a DPR for new extensions that include a line to Pune Airport at Lohegaon and a spur line to rapidly developing residential zones in Kondhwa, Yewalewadi, and Undri.
The detailed station designs will focus on general arrangement drawings, aesthetic planning, interface detailing, and full solar compliance. All stations will accommodate six-coach trains and integrate sustainable features as per IGBC Green MRTS standards to aim for top environmental ratings.
Authorities are also planning property development around stations to increase non-fare revenue and are exploring the feasibility of additional floors above or below the platforms.
Key Connectivity Features:
- Swargate North Station to link with Swargate Metro (PCMC-Swargate line) via a pedestrian FOB or underpass.
- Kharadi Chowk Metro to connect with the upcoming Kharadi Junction Metro on the Ramwadi-Wagholi corridor via a foot overbridge.
- Hadapsar Railway Metro Station to get two FOBs: one of 350 m to connect with the Railway station, and another 450 m to cross State Highway 27.
While Pune Metro’s Vanaz to Ramwadi and PCMC to Swargate services are already operational, proposed extensions to Katraj, Nigdi, Chandni Chowk, and Wagholi remain under consideration, pending central clearance.
The Phase 2 expansion promises to bolster connectivity, ease traffic pressure, and integrate major urban zones through modern mass rapid transit solutions.
