Pune, 4 June 2025: Several residents in Wakad have raised alarms over the quality of drinking water supplied by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), reporting health concerns ranging from stomach upsets to the presence of worms in the water.

Sachin Londhe, an active resident of Wakad complained to Pune Pulse that PCMC should take cognisance of the complaints and also carry out routine water checks especially in monsoon. Such negligence is totally unacceptable, citizens are falling ill because of such contaminated water.

The issue came to light after some housing societies carried out routine cleaning of their water tanks. Post-cleaning, residents began noticing irregularities in the water supply. One resident shared that the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) level of the water was between 200–250 ppm, which, while technically within acceptable limits, raised concerns when accompanied by unusual taste and health complaints.

Another resident pointed out the yellowish tint in the tap water that has persisted for a week, coinciding with an increase in stomach-related ailments in the locality. “We’ve never seen this kind of discoloration before. It’s worrying, especially when children are also falling sick,” said the resident.

Residents in various parts of Wakad have echoed similar concerns. “The taste of the water has changed drastically, and several people in our society have complained of digestive issues,” reported a resident. Disturbingly, there were also reports of minute worms being spotted in the drinking water, raising serious questions about the treatment and safety of the municipal water supply.

Another citizen emphasized the need for microbiological testing, specifically for coliform bacteria, to determine the presence of harmful pathogens.

The residents are now urging PCMC to immediately investigate the water quality, conduct comprehensive lab testing, and ensure regular chlorination and filtration to avoid potential health outbreaks. Until then, many societies are resorting to using water purifiers or relying on packaged drinking water.
