Pune News: Fear And Greed Fuel Rise In Cyber Frauds, Over 20 Cases In Baner In One Month
Pune: A special police-public interaction session was recently organised jointly by the Baner Police Station, Baner Traffic Division, and the Balewadi Welfare Federation to raise awareness about growing cybercrime threats. During the event, Senior Police Inspector Chandrashekhar Sawant addressed the residents of Baner and Balewadi, highlighting the alarming rise in cyber frauds and how citizens often fall prey due to fear and greed.
Inspector Sawant explained that increasing financial greed or panic when confronted with fake threats often leads people into cyber traps. He warned that cybercriminals are getting smarter, using fear tactics like fake “digital arrests” to deceive people. These scams target all sections of society—young and old, men and women alike.
He urged residents to remain alert and never act out of panic. “If anything suspicious happens, don’t be afraid. Immediately call the police helpline numbers 112 or 1930. Quick reporting can help prevent major losses,” he said. He gave real-life examples to explain different types of cyber fraud and provided detailed safety tips.
Sawant also stressed the importance of background verification in housing societies. He advised that proper documentation and police verification must be done before hiring domestic workers or security personnel. “Do not share personal information on social media without careful thought. Cybercriminals are always on the lookout for such data,” he cautioned.
During the session, residents raised concerns on various local issues, including safety and street lighting. Inspector Sawant assured the community that the police team is available 24/7 and encouraged citizens to call 112 to report any untoward incident.
The event was chaired by Ganpatrao Balwadkar, Founder-President of Shri Khanderay Pratishthan. The unique initiative was well-received and appreciated by the residents of Baner and Balewadi.
Several key members of the federation including Ashok Nawal, Adv. Mashalkar, Dafedar Singh, Adv. Indrajit Kulkarni, Moreshwar Balwadkar, Vikas Kamat, Ashish Kotamkar, Asmita Karandikar, Vaibhav Aadhav, Yash Chaudhary, Dr. Sudhir Nikhare, and Ramesh Rokade contributed to the success of the program. The event was compered by Shubhangi Chapate.
