Soon, Take Your Car On A Train From Mumbai To Goa: Konkan Railway Plans Unique Travel Option For Passengers
Mumbai, June 9, 2025 – Imagine driving your car onto a train in Mumbai and relaxing while it is transported alongside you all the way to Goa. This innovative travel experience could soon become a reality, thanks to an upcoming initiative by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL). Inspired by its successful Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) freight model for trucks, KRCL is now planning to extend the concept to private passenger vehicles such as cars and SUVs.
The service, likely to begin with a pilot run during the Ganapati festival season, aims to offer a safer, greener, and more convenient alternative to the usual 10–12 hour road trip between Mumbai and Goa. The route is notorious for sharp turns, ghats, heavy traffic, and weather-related disruptions—issues the Ro-Ro model can help bypass.
What is the Ro-Ro Model?
The Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) system involves vehicles being driven onto specially designed rail wagons using ramps. These wagons can securely carry vehicles with a maximum height of 3.425 meters. The service is already operational for trucks between Kolad in Maharashtra and Mangalore in Karnataka, and truck drivers often accompany their vehicles, resting in their cabins during the journey.
For private vehicles, the model will work similarly. However, the train will only operate when a minimum of 40 vehicles are available for the ride, keeping operations cost-effective.
Key Benefits for Travelers
- Saves time: Avoids the long, tiring road journey.
- Environment-friendly: Reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
- Comfort and safety: Especially useful during the monsoon when road travel is challenging.
- Relaxing experience: Allows passengers to enjoy scenic views, read, or rest during the trip.
Boost to Monsoon Travel
The Konkan region is prone to landslides and waterlogging in the monsoon, making highway travel risky. With this rail-based alternative, travelers can avoid pothole-ridden roads while reaching their destination comfortably.
Konkan Railway has also upgraded its monsoon preparedness. This year, the monsoon timetable will run from June 15 to October 20, shortened by 10 days due to improved safety measures. These include:
- Deployment of 636 trained personnel for real-time monitoring of vulnerable zones.
- Installation of LED signals and automated rain gauges at 9 key locations.
- Reduced train speeds during poor visibility to prevent accidents.
Looking Ahead
KRCL has transported commercial for years. Extending the same for cars and SUVs is the next step.
If the trial proves successful, it could revolutionize travel on other busy routes across India and significantly decongest highways while offering a premium experience to road-trippers.
So this Ganapati season, instead of driving to Goa, you might just ride the rails with your car in tow.
