1206: Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani Dies in Air Crash on 12/06, His ‘Lucky Number’ Turns Unlucky
Flight seat 12 and date 12/06 prove fatal as former CM’s symbolic number becomes the day of his tragic end
In a tragic twist of fate, former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani died in the plane crash on June 12, a date eerily matching his long-believed lucky number: 1206. The number, once seen on his vehicles and personal belongings, turned out to be the marker of his final journey.
According to official reports, Rupani was on board Air India flight AI171 — a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, flying from Ahmedabad to London when the aircraft crashed. The disaster occurred on June 12, 2025, and claimed the lives of 241 out of 242 people on board, including passengers and crew. Ironically, Rupani was seated in seat number 12, a number closely associated with his symbolic 1206, while the sole survivor was seated at number 11.
Many in India and across the world believe in the influence of numbers on destiny. From numerology to astrology, numbers are often seen as signs of fortune or doom. Cricketer Virat Kohli, for example, famously wears the number 18 jersey across all formats of the game and this IPL’s 18th season ended with his team, RCB, finally lifting the trophy.
In Rupani’s case, the number 1206 held personal significance, his car and bike both bore registration plates ending in the digits. It’s this same number, 12/06 (12th June) and seat 12, that has now tragically marked the end of his life.
The political world is mourning his untimely demise. BJP leaders including national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain, Rajya Sabha MP Sambit Patra, and Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya took to social media to express their grief and offer condolences. They described Rupani’s death as a deep and irreplaceable loss to the party and the nation.
Rupani, a seasoned politician and respected figure, had dedicated his life to public service. His passing marks the loss of an experienced and steady leader for Gujarat.
