Kedarnath by Helicopter: A Soaring Spiritual Journey and What You Need to Know Before You Fly
Every year, thousands of pilgrims make the arduous journey to Kedarnath, one of the holiest shrines in the Char Dham Yatra. Nestled high in the Garhwal Himalayas, Kedarnath is as spiritually significant as it is geographically remote. While many still brave the uphill trek, a growing number of devotees are now opting for a quicker, more comfortable alternative: helicopter travel.
But how does this spiritual air journey work? What are the costs, timings, and safety protocols in place? Here’s a complete breakdown of everything you need to know about reaching Kedarnath via helicopter in 2025.
Daily Devotees and Flight Operations
On average, around 1,500 pilgrims travel to Kedarnath by helicopter every single day. Operating from three key helipads—Phata, Sersi, and Guptkashi—nine aviation companies run approximately 250 flights daily, weather permitting. Each helicopter can typically carry 5 to 6 passengers, with about 150 travelers booking their tickets online per day.
With the increasing demand for faster and more accessible spiritual experiences, helicopter services have become a crucial part of the Kedarnath Yatra infrastructure.
Recent Helicopter Incidents Raise Safety Concerns
Despite the convenience, it’s important to acknowledge safety concerns. In just the last 1.5 months, three helicopter crashes occurred in Uttarakhand, tragically claiming the lives of 13 individuals. The most recent accident happened near Gaurikund, where 7 people, including 6 pilgrims aboard a private helicopter, lost their lives.
These incidents underscore the need for tighter safety protocols and awareness among travelers choosing air travel to the temple.

Mandatory Registration Before Booking
Before you can even think about booking a helicopter, there’s one crucial step: Char Dham Yatra registration. No registration, no ticket. This rule applies to all passengers looking to book online via the IRCTC Heli Yatra website, which is the only official platform for Kedarnath helicopter bookings.
Also worth noting:
One ID can be used to book up to 6 seats at a time.
Group travelers can book up to 12 seats simultaneously.
Pre-registration on the Uttarakhand Tourism Portal is compulsory before you proceed to ticket booking.
The Helicopter Companies and Helipads
The Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) has signed a 3-year agreement with 9 aviation companies to manage and operate helicopter services to Kedarnath. These include:

These companies operate primarily from:

Of the three, only Sersi allows bookings directly from Dehradun, but passengers must switch helicopters there for the final leg to Kedarnath.
