Pune: Wagholi Residents Call Off Hunger Strike After PMC Begins Drainage Work on Ivy Estate Road
Wagholi, Pune: The hunger strike initiated by residents of Ivy Estate Road, Wagholi, was called off after the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) began addressing the long-pending drainage issue that has impacted over 25,000 local residents.
The residents launched a peaceful hunger strike demanding an immediate and effective resolution to the absence of a proper drainage system, which has plagued the area for years. Despite numerous complaints to PMC and elected representatives, no tangible steps were taken until now.
On the first day of the protest, the local MLA visited the site and assured citizens that their concerns would be addressed. By Day 2, PMC began implementing a temporary solution by initiating pipeline-laying work along Ivy Estate Road.
“We sincerely thank our local MLA for his quick response, PMC officials, social workers, and the countless Wagholikars who stood united in this cause. We are also grateful to the local police for their cooperation,” said resident Anil Kumar Mishra.
However, residents emphasized that the temporary fix is not enough. “The PMC must now move forward with a permanent drainage solution. If not, we will have no choice but to resume the hunger strike. Our fight is — and will always be — for basic civic rights and dignity,” Mishra added.
The residents have called off the strike temporarily, keeping a close watch on PMC’s follow-through and long-term action.
