Pune: Katraj Flyover Faces Another Deadline Extension; Completion Now Expected In 2026
Pune, June 18, 2025: Even after four years since the groundbreaking ceremony, the Katraj flyover remains incomplete. Persistent land acquisition hurdles have led to repeated deadline extensions, and the latest estimate suggests that the flyover may not be inaugurated until 2026.
The foundation stone for the Katraj flyover was laid on September 24, 2021, and the original deadline for completion was February 24, 2024. However, due to delays primarily linked to land acquisition, the project has received two extensions. Now, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has granted a new extension until December 2025. But looking at the current pace of work, even this deadline seems unlikely to be met.
Earlier this month, NHAI had stated that if the remaining land acquisition was completed by mid-June, the flyover could be ready in six months. However, as of mid-June, there has been no significant progress. Given the pending land acquisition process and the time required by the municipal corporation and district administration, completing the flyover by the new deadline appears unfeasible.
The construction, currently at around 50% completion, continues to face roadblocks—particularly at the Rajas Society Chowk where 11 key plots are needed to build the descent ramp. So far, only 7 of these plots have been acquired. The property department has now shifted the responsibility of acquiring the remaining land to the land acquisition wing, which recently conducted measurements. However, a strike by land surveyors has further delayed the acquisition process.
Residents and commuters, long affected by traffic congestion in the Katraj area, are urging the NHAI, municipal corporation, and other concerned departments to expedite the work and relieve the daily traffic chaos.
