“Someone Is Filming Us!”: Tourists Claim Hotel Stay in India Turned Unsafe
A video shared by a group of American tourists has sparked outrage online after it showed a man allegedly filming them from his hotel room window while they were sunbathing in bikinis at a hotel in Delhi.
The group was staying at the Courtyard by Marriott in Gurugram, just outside Delhi. In the video, the women point towards a window and claim someone is recording them from there. One of the women is heard saying, “Someone is filming us, and they are not being discreet.”
The video quickly went viral and has received over 8 million views. The woman posted the clip on social media with a caption that said, “Well, it looks like we’re going to have to find a new pastime… If you’re a female planning on coming to India, I wouldn’t come without a bodyguard of a man, lol. Whether you are sunbathing or fully clothed, we are finding this behavior very common in India.”
The video and post have caused strong reactions online. Many people shared their support and said the hotel should take action. Others said the laws in India about filming in public or hotel areas are not very clear.
Indian law says it is illegal to record someone in a fully private place, like a bathroom or bedroom, without their consent. But filming in shared or semi-private spaces, like hotel balconies or pools, can fall into a grey area and is often hard to prove as a crime.
The women later shared a second video. They explained that in India, people usually dress in a more covered way, even while swimming. They said, “To explain further, the dress in Delhi, India, is very conservative. Even when swimming, women typically wear clothing so they are fully covered… As Floridians, anything goes in our book!”
Many online users said tourists should be made more aware of cultural norms in India. Others said safety and privacy should be protected for everyone, no matter what they are wearing.
So far, the hotel has not given any official statement about the incident. It is not known yet if any action has been taken against the person who was allegedly filming.
