New Delhi, June 26, 2025 — Putting an end to widespread rumours, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari have confirmed that two-wheelers will continue to be exempt from toll charges on national highways.

The clarification follows recent media reports suggesting that toll taxes might soon be levied on motorbikes and scooters, possibly beginning July 15, 2025. However, NHAI firmly stated that no such proposal is under consideration by the Government of India.

In an official statement, NHAI said, “There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers. The reports claiming otherwise are false and misleading.” The agency also took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to label such reports as #FakeNews.

Minister Nitin Gadkari echoed the sentiment, criticising sections of the media for spreading misinformation. “Some media houses are creating panic by reporting that toll tax will be imposed on two-wheelers. I assure the public that no such proposal exists, and the toll exemption for two-wheelers will remain fully intact,” he wrote on X.

The toll-free policy for two-wheelers has long been in place to support low-income commuters and to ease traffic congestion at toll plazas. Two-wheelers are also restricted from entering certain high-speed expressways such as Mumbai–Pune and Vadodara–Ahmedabad, but they are not required to pay toll on national highways.

Meanwhile, while two-wheelers remain toll-free, the government has introduced a new FASTag-based annual pass for private vehicles such as cars and jeeps. Starting August 15, this pass will cost ₹3,000 and will be valid for 200 trips or one year, whichever comes first. It can be purchased via the Rajmarg Yatra App or official government portals.

The clarification from NHAI and Gadkari has come as a relief to millions of two-wheeler users across India, who can continue to travel toll-free on national highways.
