WhatsApp Adds Document Scanner for Android Beta: Here’s How to Use the New Feature
WhatsApp is making life easier for Android users by rolling out a built-in document scanning feature, now available for those enrolled in its beta program. Previously limited to iOS, this tool lets Android users scan and share documents directly within WhatsApp—removing the need for third-party apps.
The feature was first spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.18.29, where it was hidden during initial testing. With the latest beta update via the Google Play Store, more users can now access it.
After installing the update, a new option called “Scan Document” appears in the attachment menu alongside “Browse Documents” and “Choose from Gallery.” Selecting it opens the phone’s camera and activates the scanning interface.
The scanner supports manual and auto capture modes. Manual mode lets users decide when to click, while auto mode uses edge detection to snap the document automatically once it’s framed correctly.
Once scanned, WhatsApp instantly converts the image into a PDF file, ready to be shared with contacts—all without leaving the app. The process uses Android’s document scanning APIs, keeping everything on-device for better privacy and speed.
This feature aims to simplify the document-sharing process, making it easier to send IDs, contracts, or notes directly through WhatsApp.
Alongside this, WhatsApp is also rolling out an AI-driven chat summary tool powered by Meta AI, offering bullet-point overviews of conversations to help users catch up faster.
Currently, the document scanning tool is limited to Android beta testers, but a wider rollout is expected soon—part of WhatsApp’s broader push to become a complete productivity and communication hub.
