A swarm of bees caused an unexpected delay at Surat airport on Monday evening, grounding an IndiGo flight bound for Jaipur. According to NDTV, Flight 6E784 was scheduled to depart at 4:20 PM, but the takeoff was delayed by over an hour after the bees settled near the aircraft’s open luggage hatch.

All passengers had already boarded and baggage loading was underway when the bees descended on the cargo area, creating a scene that left airport staff scrambling. Ground personnel initially waited, hoping the insects would leave on their own. When that failed, they tried to smoke them out—a standard method for bee dispersal—but without success.

As the situation persisted, the airport’s fire department was called in. A fire engine was brought onto the runway, and water was sprayed near the luggage compartment to drive the swarm away. The tactic worked, and the bees finally dispersed.

The Airbus A320 eventually took off at 5:26 PM, nearly an hour behind schedule. Notably, the delay was about as long as the actual flight time between Surat and Jaipur.
