Mumbai, July 10, 2025: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced in the legislative council on Wednesday that the state government has decided to implement smart postpaid electricity meters across Maharashtra. He also confirmed that the earlier proposal for prepaid smart meters has been scrapped.

Responding to queries during a calling attention motion, Fadnavis informed the House that under the ongoing initiative, 27,826 feeder meters and 37 lakh consumer meters have already been installed. To encourage energy efficiency, consumers are being offered a 10% discount on electricity bills for consumption during solar hours. He added that this marks the first instance of electricity rates being reduced in the state.

Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Anil Parab raised concerns regarding buildings in Mumbai that lack an occupation certificate (OC), pointing out that around 16,000 such buildings are unable to avail of these smart meters.
