Update free before age 7; failure to do so may lead to Aadhaar cancellation

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued a fresh advisory to parents and guardians, urging them to update the Aadhaar biometrics of children aged between five and seven years. This is a critical step in maintaining the validity and functionality of their Aadhaar numbers.

In a statement issued on July 15, 2025, UIDAI explained that biometric data such as fingerprints and iris scans are not captured during Aadhaar enrolment for children under five due to the immaturity of these features. As a result, a mandatory biometric update (MBU) is required once the child turns five.

Free Update Before Age Seven

The authority emphasized that the biometric update is completely free of cost if done before the child turns seven. However, if the update is delayed beyond that age, a fee of ₹100 will apply, and there is a risk that the child’s Aadhaar number may be cancelled for non-compliance.

Why the Update Matters

UIDAI highlighted that an updated Aadhaar is vital for smooth access to several essential services, including:

  • School admissions
  • Entrance exam registrations
  • Scholarship schemes
  • Government welfare and DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) programs

Aadhaar with updated biometric facilitates ease of living and ensures seamless usage in availing services,” UIDAI said.

SMS Alerts to Registered Numbers

To ensure timely compliance, UIDAI has begun sending SMS reminders to registered mobile numbers linked to the child’s Aadhaar. The notification prompts parents to visit the nearest Aadhaar enrolment centre to complete the biometric update.

Parents and guardians are advised to act on priority and ensure their children’s Aadhaar records are up-to-date to avoid any service disruption or cancellation in the future.
