In an appalling case of betrayal driven by greed, a man from Mumbai has been accused of orchestrating a deeply disturbing plan to take over his family’s ancestral property in Pune. The 54-year-old, identified as Dharmendra Indore Rai, allegedly manipulated, drugged, and institutionalized his own sister and mother—just to gain control of their home in the upscale Sindh Housing Society in Aundh. This shocking incident, which unfolded under the jurisdiction of Chaturshringi police, has triggered outrage across Pune and beyond, highlighting the dark underbelly of property disputes that often fester within families.

According to officials, Rai travelled from his residence in Chembur, Mumbai, and deceitfully convinced his elder sister to visit a doctor for a routine blood test. But instead of medical care, what she received was a forced injection—allegedly administered by Rai—followed by an even more terrifying ordeal.

With the help of four hired female bouncers, Rai had his mentally fit sister forcibly admitted to a psychiatric institution. On the same day, he arranged to have their elderly mother placed in an old-age home, allegedly without her knowledge or consent. Both women had been living together at the family’s ancestral home prior to the incident.

The sister, however, managed to escape from the psychiatric facility, thanks to the intervention of concerned friends and vigilant neighbours. With their help, she reached out to authorities and registered a formal complaint with the Chaturshringi police.

An FIR has now been lodged against Dharmendra Rai and the four female bouncers under various sections of the Mental Health Care Act. A senior police officer confirmed the development, stating, “The complainant, after realizing she had been wrongfully institutionalized, managed to alert her contacts and eventually secure her release. She later approached us to file the complaint.”

Investigators are now digging deeper to establish the full extent of Rai’s alleged manipulation and the means he used to carry out the scheme. The role of the psychiatric facility and the old-age home is also under scrutiny, given the apparent lack of proper verification before admitting the victims.

Moreover, this isn’t the first shocking incident tied to domestic conflict in the region. Earlier this year, a 27-year-old man from Pimpri Chinchwad set over a dozen scooters on fire after his mother refused to support his drug habit. That act was captured on CCTV and caused a public uproar, but the Sindh Society case has struck an even deeper nerve.
