Pune’s Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro Line 3 Conducts Second High-Speed Trial Run
Pune, July 22, 2025: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) conducted the second successful trial run of Metro Line 3, connecting Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar, marking a key milestone for the city’s public transport network. The trial was conducted at a speed of approximately 40 kmph between Mann Depot and Hinjawadi Phase 2, demonstrating steady progress toward the metro’s operational readiness.
A Leap Forward for Urban Transit
Earlier this month, the first trial run was held on the 23.3-kilometer fully elevated corridor, between Maan Depot and PMR-4 Station. With nearly 87% of the project completed, this second trial reinforces the efficiency, safety, and potential of the upcoming metro line.
A Game-Changer for Pune’s IT Hub
Metro Line 3 is expected to be a transformative project for thousands of daily commuters, especially those working in the densely populated Hinjawadi IT Park. Once operational, the corridor will offer a faster, more reliable, and eco-friendly mode of transport, easing congestion across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Key Features of Pune Metro Line 3:
- Route: Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar
- Total Length: 23.3 km (fully elevated)
- Stations: 23, including key interchange stations
- Train Capacity: 1,000 passengers per 3-coach, air-conditioned train
- Top Speed: Up to 80 kmph
- Target Completion: March 2026
Built Through Public-Private Partnership
Being executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by PMRDA and Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCRL), the project has made rapid progress since construction began on November 25, 2024. A PMRDA official stated, “This successful trial reflects our team’s commitment. Metro Line 3 will play a vital role in decongesting Pune, especially around Hinjawadi.”
Partial Opening to Begin in September
In response to growing public concern over severe traffic congestion in Hinjawadi, PMRDA plans to open a 13-kilometer stretch—from Megapolis Circle to Balewadi Phata—by September 2025, according to a report by Hindustan Times. The early opening aims to provide immediate relief to commuters and ease peak-hour pressure.
As construction nears its final phase, Pune residents can expect a smoother, greener, and more efficient commuting experience in the near future.
