MSEDCL Honoured For AI-Based Power Demand Forecasting System

MSEDCL Honoured For AI-Based Power Demand Forecasting System
Mumbai, July 24, 2025: Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) was honoured at the prestigious Urban Challenge Summit and Urban Innovations Awards 2025 organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in New Delhi on Thursday. The award recognised MSEDCL’s innovative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accurately forecast electricity demand.
MSEDCL Chairman and Managing Director Lokesh Chandra congratulated all officers and staff for the achievement. The project reflects the government’s vision, under the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, to integrate cutting-edge information technology into public services.
The honoured project leverages AI and machine learning tools to predict electricity demand accurately and support advanced business analytics. The award was accepted on behalf of MSEDCL by Sandeep Patil, Chief Engineer (Power Purchase).
Given the ever-changing nature of electricity demand, the AI-based system was designed to enable MSEDCL to forecast consumption trends and prepare the technical infrastructure accordingly. The system was developed with the guidance of Minister of State for Energy Meghana Sakore-Bordikar and Additional Chief Secretary (Energy) Abha Shukla.
This intelligent forecasting mechanism factors in various variables such as weather patterns, historical electricity usage, economic indicators, industrial activity, festivals, lifestyle shifts, and government policies to derive accurate demand projections. It also considers power plant maintenance schedules, supply contracts, and fuel availability to estimate electricity supply.
The AI system plays a critical role in determining the supply-demand gap and helps devise strategies for advance or real-time electricity purchases. It is also used while bidding for power on electricity exchanges, helping avoid unnecessary purchases and contributing to grid stability.
MSEDCL’s initiative has been hailed as a significant step forward in efficient energy management through the smart integration of technology.
