A Class 10 student from Som Lalit School in Ahmedabad’s Navrangpura locality is fighting for her life after she jumped from the fourth floor of the school building on Thursday afternoon, during recess. The 16-year-old girl was reportedly suffering from depression, and though her classmates tried to intervene, she managed to escape their grip and jump before any staff could be alerted.

The shocking incident occurred while students were out of their classrooms for the lunch break. According to eyewitnesses, a group of three to four classmates noticed the girl walking toward the edge of the building and sensed something was wrong. One of them even held her hand in an attempt to stop her. “She broke free and jumped before we could call any teachers,” a classmate reportedly told investigators.

She was immediately rushed by EMRI 108 to a nearby hospital. Later, her parents transferred her to another private hospital in the Thaltej area for more advanced treatment. Medical officials stated that the girl had sustained a severe head injury, a major concussion, and fractures to her limbs. As of Friday, she remains in the ICU in a critical and unconscious state.

Police officials have launched a detailed probe into the incident. Inspector A.A. Desai from Navrangpura Police Station confirmed that a medico-legal case has been registered. “We visited the hospital and found her in critical condition. We are still investigating and have not yet determined why she attempted suicide,” he said.

Officials say there is currently no evidence of foul play but they are not ruling out any possibilities. “We’re exploring every angle. It’s too early to jump to conclusions,” said Safin Hasan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone I). “We plan to speak to her parents, teachers, and friends to understand her state of mind and what may have led to this.”

The school management also issued a statement regarding the girl’s medical history. “According to a medical note submitted by her mother, the student had been under treatment for depression. She was on leave for a month and returned to school about ten days ago. Since then, she had been regularly attending classes,” said Pragnesh Shastri, the managing trustee of Som Lalit School.

Crime scene investigators and forensic experts were sent to the school soon after the incident. Police teams are reviewing CCTV footage to understand the timeline and circumstances leading up to the jump.

Assistant Commissioner of Police H.M. Kansagra confirmed that a formal entry was made in the police diary and teams were dispatched to the school shortly after the girl was admitted. “A panel post-mortem was prepared in case of a fatality, but as of now, she remains under treatment,” he said.

Statements from school staff, the class teacher, and several students who were present at the time have already been recorded. Police plan to return on Monday to speak with some of the girl’s close friends, who may provide further insight.

An investigator added, “Right now, our top priority is her recovery. We’ll speak with her directly only once she regains consciousness and is stable.”
