A foreign tourist visiting Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, has gone viral on social media, not for sightseeing, but for showing a strong sense of civic responsibility. In a video that has now been widely shared, the tourist is seen picking up plastic wrappers and trash left behind by other visitors at a scenic waterfall.

The clip, originally posted by X (formerly Twitter) user @iNikhilsaini on July 24, shows the tourist calmly gathering waste and throwing it into a dustbin, while other people nearby continue to ignore the mess. The post was captioned: “Shameful, a foreign tourist is more concerned about nature’s beauty, while local tourists keep shamelessly littering such stunning places. No govt or administration is to be blamed.”

In the video, the tourist is heard speaking to the person recording, saying, “Every day, I sit up here and watch and tell people to pick this up,” revealing that he regularly tries to clean the area and encourage others to do the same.

Reactions Online

Since it was posted, the video has received over 4.5 million views and sparked a wave of responses. Many social media users expressed embarrassment and frustration at the state of public cleanliness in tourist spots.

“It’s all about mindset,” wrote one user. “Many people think it’s only the government’s job to keep the country clean.” Others pointed to a lack of early education around civic responsibility. “We still teach kids to throw trash out of car windows. This is deeply embarrassing,” said another commenter. “Our values as a society have eroded. It takes a foreigner to remind us of our responsibilities.”

Some users praised the tourist’s act, while others criticized domestic tourists for their negligence. “No amount of rules or Swachh Bharat slogans will work unless people change their attitudes,” said one. Another added, “No wonder the world sees us as uncouth, despite our lofty claims of being a Vishwaguru.”

Call for Change

The video has sparked renewed discussion around the need for better public awareness campaigns, early education on civic habits, and stricter penalties for littering.
